ESET NOD32 Antivirus is decent antispyware software ideal for anyone seeking basic protection from malicious internet threats. The application provides sufficient proactive detection, keeping your PC and confidential information safe from harmful spyware, viruses, hacking exploits and more. But ESET’s malware removal proves second-tier and support options are limited.
For such a well-known security brand, ESET has less-than-stellar test scores from independent labs, namely the AV-Test. The software netted a 3.5 out of 6.0 for protection – good, but not outstanding. ESET flubs when it comes to removal and repair, scoring a weak 2.0. According to the AV-Test, the antispyware software has trouble removing all components of found malware, which can cause major system issues.
ESET redeems itself a bit with rapid scans; the application is one of the fastest we tested, scanning more than 15MB of data per second. But that speed comes with the hefty price tag of heavy resource usage. The software uses a staggering 60MB of RAM during scans and nearly 10MB while idle.
We were also disappointed with the software’s lack of support options. ESET only renders support to clients via email; other top vendors also provide telephone and live chat support, and would like to see ESET do so as well. There are some useful online resources, though, including a comprehensive knowledgebase and video tutorials.
While most of ESET underwhelms, we were happy to find it provides a full range of features. The anti-spyware software can scan any removable storage device you connect to your computer, as well as incoming email. You can also schedule scans to occur when you want, whether at specific times or while your PC isn’t in use. This antispyware tool also does a good job of hiding unnecessary complex components on its interface unless you switch to an advanced view. You can adjust security levels, but the software’s settings are rather complex, so we wouldn’t recommend tweaking them unless you know what you’re doing.
It may not be the best antispyware software on the market, but ESET NOD32 Antivirus is a good option for home users in need of basic PC protection. The software can effectively block most malware, but removing found infections can be tricky, so if you need to clean up an infected PC, we’d recommend opting for another antispyware tool.
