Ford says its Focus Electric aims to impress.

The Ford Motor Company* indicates a new company model could be one of the country's most energy efficient cars.

According to testing conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the 2012 Ford Focus Electric is America's most fuel-efficient five-passenger vehicle, getting the equivalent of 110 miles per gallon in the city and 99 miles per gallon on the highway. Electric vehicle mileage is determined by the number of kilowatt-hours it takes to travel a certain distance.

Ford says Focus Electric sets records in mileage, charging capabilities

The American automaker said not only is the 2012 Ford Focus one of the best vehicles to drive for energy efficiency among vehicles in general, it more than competes with its electric-vehicle contemporaries. For example, the Ford Focus Electric has been certified as getting the equivalent of six miles per gallon more than the Nissan Leaf. In addition, the Focus has more legroom and charges faster than the Nissan Leaf, the automaker asserts.

Eric Kuehn, chief nameplate engineer at for Ford's Focus Electric unit, said the company is supplying today's motorists with more car buying options to help them save money and reduce their fuel costs. In addition, the release of the 2013 Ford Fusion will give them another affordable choice.

"Ford is giving customers the power of choice for leading fuel economy regardless of what type of vehicle or powertrain technology they choose," said Kuehn. "The Focus and Fusion are great examples of how we transformed our fleet of cars, utilities and trucks with leading fuel efficiency."

Chuck Gray, chief engineer of global engineering and electric vehicles at Ford, said the company has devoted a considerable amount of resources to the Focus' development and believes those efforts will pay off for consumers.

"We've been working for three years to make the Focus Electric America's most fuel-efficient vehicle of its kind," said Gray." The entire group feels like a sports team that has just won a major championship. It's a good feeling to be at this point now."

He added that some people might be hesitant to buy an electric vehicle, fearing that it will be too different from standard unleaded fuel-consuming vehicles. However, because the Fusion Electric was built in the same mold as Ford's global C-segment car, motorists should not notice a significant difference in functionality.
