TopTenREVIEWS - Silver Award - Awarded for excellence in design, useability and feature set

If you're looking for enterprise-level construction estimating software, look no further than Hard Dollar. This TopTenREVIEWS Silver Award winner offers project cost management tools that are perfect for heavy civil construction such as infrastructure, mining and industrial projects. The easy-to-use interface allows you to create bids and track projects in a way that will help decrease the number of errors while increasing your bottom line.

In addition to the intuitive interface, Hard Dollar also integrates with third-party software like Primavera and Microsoft Project. While the application can be overwhelming, the manufacturer offers helpful tutorials and videos. We are a little disappointed in the customer service, but overall, we found Hard Dollar to be one of the best construction bidding software options available.

Hard Dollar emphasizes the fact that it is more than estimating software – it's project cost management software too. The application is able to create an estimate, predict costs and track progress. You can also create a variety of "what if" scenarios instantly to foresee any possible problems. Hard Dollar can run as a stand-alone application or in a server environment. It features real-time, dynamic integration with your schedule, so any adjustments you make are immediately calculated and presented. Any changes you or anyone else makes are logged and recorded for future reference, if needed.

After creating an estimate, you can easily compare the planned cost versus the actual cost, and you can see the forecasted costs, as well. This can help you adjust accordingly and save lost time and money. Hard Dollar also allows you to check the report engine online, whether you're using a computer with the software installed on it or not.

This construction bidding software has a lot to take in, but it also has a lot to offer. It features a scalable workload design, so you can use it for smaller projects as well as bigger projects. However, Hard Dollar is designed primarily for civil and industrial projects, not building construction.

When using Hard Dollar, you can create, edit and view details for each line item. The application functions much like Excel, so it has a familiar feel to it. You can also create an escalation scale for potential future costs and calculate future costs down to the line item level. You can then group these items into assemblies and save them for future use. With Hard Dollar, you can easily adjust for geographical areas, currencies and rates. This kind of flexibility is one of the reasons we are impressed with this construction estimating software.

Hard Dollar has an extensive video library with more than 75 helpful tutorials. These videos will help ensure that you get the most out of the application. Most people won't watch all of the videos, but they're broken up into sections so that you can find exactly what you're looking for.

In addition, the software itself is easy to use. It has an interface similar to many Microsoft platforms, so there is only a slight learning curve for navigating the application. You can drag and drop items, use the copy/paste function and select items from the built-in dropdown menus, so updating and adjusting information doesn't take as long as having to enter it all manually.

Hard Dollar makes it easy to use this application in conjunction with the project management systems that you already have in place. As previously mentioned, you can import and export information in Hard Dollar to third-party project management software such as Primavera and Microsoft Project. Additionally, you can send and receive financial data from enterprise resource planning systems like SAP, Oracle and JD Edwards. Hard Dollar does not offer a mobile app for your iPhone or iPad, however.

The customer service department of Hard Dollar is surprisingly inconsistent. The customer support team immediately and thoroughly responded to some of our inquiries, whereas other emails remain unanswered. We also had to call a few different support numbers to reach an actual person, but when we did finally talk to someone, he was able to answer all of our questions. Finally, Hard Dollar offers the semblance of live chat support on its site, but every time we clicked the live chat link, a window popped up that said "Sorry! All of our operators are busy."

Hard Dollar is one of the most flexible construction estimating software applications we found in our review. It integrates with many systems that companies already have in place. It offers a user-friendly interface and a scalable, repeatable process. Aside from a few glitches in the customer service department, we highly recommend this software for large-scale civil and industrial projects.
