Washington, D.C. is an option for an inexpensive spring break destination that may be within driving distance.

Though many students dream of a spring vacation in a tropical destination, such trips can be expensive. The Gloucester County Times has offered some more affordable alternatives that will save money, but keep all the fun.

Washington D.C. is a prime destination that may be within driving distance for many living on the east coast, making the travel less expensive, according to the Times. In addition to the cost-saving benefits, the trip can be exciting for those who have never been to the nation's capital. Springtime in D.C. offers special events, such as the Cherry Blossom Festival in early April.

Another popular road trip destination for those from nearby east coast locations is Florida, which the paper says is easily reachable by "cruising down [interstate] 95." The sunshine state offers many beaches, some of which rival those at popular spring break destinations in the Caribbean.

The Times also recommends alternative spring breaks as way to save money and enjoy time off from school while making a difference. On these trips, students learn about issues such as poverty, hunger and the environment, according to the paper.

By using these tips, students may be able to enjoy spring break for less. However, those going on a road trip should make sure they have adequate auto insurance in case something goes wrong.
