Is the fall of the YouTube Empire closer than we think?

YouTube. It’s second nature. If you need to look up some one hit wonder or your favorite cat video, YouTube is always there to provide. But what happens when other, perhaps better streaming services start to get thrown in the mix? How about streaming services that offer a filter option? As smartphone users migrate towards a more advanced, more mobile way of sharing, using apps like Viddy and Socialcam, there has been much speculation as to what will happen with YouTube.

According to a recent report by the mobile analytics firm Flurry, between December and March, mobile video app usage skyrocketed 52% from 152 minutes to 231 minutes, while Google’s YouTube usage statistics dropped 10%.

VP of marketing at Flurry said, “[w]hile it cannot be concluded that mobile video apps are cannibalizing YouTube, the shift in time spent between these two platforms appears to be a signal of disruption[.] [...] Think of it this way: With every mobile video you share of friends, family, vacations, parties, and weddings, you are likely loading another bullet in the chamber for Web 30.”

It’s still too early to predict whether or not YouTube will fall short to these new and improved ways of sharing. And who knows, maybe Google has some huge plan for YouTube up its sleeve that we’ll all be writing about in a few months. But for now the other video apps like Viddy are growing like crazy and are being valued more than ever expected.

How do you choose to stream video, traditionally through YouTube, or are you leaning towards more mobile-friendly apps like Viddy?
