Some Ohio drivers may be unaware of a law that requires them to turn their headlights on whenever their windshield wipers are in use.

Compliance is low on an Ohio law that requires drivers to turn on their headlights whenever they have their windshield wipers on, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

The news source did an independent investigation to support their claim. Standing out on the side of a major intersection during a rain shower, they counted 67 vehicles within five minutes that were not adhering to the rule. According to their estimates, that represented about 25 percent of traffic on the road. Some of the other 75 percent of drivers were only halfway compliant, having their parking lights on, but not their full headlights, the source said.

The law was implemented for safety purposes, according to city officials. "It makes drivers' vehicles as visible as possible during inclement weather. Drivers increase safety not just for themselves, but others as well. It helps drivers see oncoming vehicles," police Staff Lieutenant Tony Bradshaw told the news source.

Weather conditions frequently play a role in auto accidents by reducing visibility and causing slippery roads. Following safe driving practices, such as maintaining speed limits, and having adequate auto insurance are essential for those driving in inclement weather.
