According to a survey conducted on behalf of Santander Insurance, 6% of homeowners surveyed will be away from their properties on New Year's Eve.

Opinium Research carried out the study of 2,011 adults for the insurer, discovering that 7% of respondents will leave their homes vacant a week before or after Christmas day.

British homeowners hoping to protect the value of their belongings in 2013 may want to make contents insurance comparisons to uncover an affordable policy.

Head of Marketing for Santander Insurance, Richard Al-Dabbagh, said: "Prevention is always better than cure so we're also advising people to take heed of some simple tips that will help keep their homes and possessions safe."

In a bid to help families protect their properties into the New Year, Santander Insurance suggested homeowners should close the curtains in their houses if they are going to be vacant in the evening.

The group also urged individuals to avoid leaving large amounts of cash at home which could tempt thieves, and to hide spare keys and car keys somewhere safe.
