Van drivers six times more likely to be nabbed on the phone, research reveals

Van drivers are risking their road safety with new research revealing they are six times more likely to be caught on the phone than car motorists.

The study from the AA also found that van drivers are more than twice as likely to have incurred a motoring conviction when compared to their smaller vehicle counterparts.

Analysis of all convictions showed that 7.4% of car drivers have had their licences endorsed, with the figure almost doubling to 15.5% for van motorists.

Director of AA Insurance Simon Douglas suggested the trend was down to white van drivers rushing from one job to another and trying to keep customers updated on their whereabouts.

Still, he warned they are "clearly getting stung for it", facing fines, risking losing their licence and suffering higher van insurance premiums.

With 44% of drivers polled by the company admitting to phoning, texting or tweeting from a hand-held mobile device while driving, many will come up against a £60 fine and three points on their licence for breaking road safety rules.

Separate research from Admiral also demonstrated the unpopularity of van drivers, with 34% of respondents voting them the most irritating road users.
