DEARBORN, Michigan — Ford is recalling 465,000 vehicles worldwide, including the 2013 Ford Explorer, Taurus, Flex, Fusion, Interceptor Utility, Interceptor Sedan and Lincoln MKS, MKT and MKZ for potentially leaky fuel tanks.

"The condition could result in customers detecting an odor of fuel, or in some cases, observe evidence of a fuel leak on the ground," wrote Kelli Felker, a Ford spokeswoman, in response to an Edmunds query. While a fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire, there have been no reports of fires.

Felker said the company is not aware of any accidents or injuries attributed to the defect. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had not posted information about the recall as of Monday morning.

Felker said 389,151 of the affected vehicles are in the U.S. Approximately 23,000 are in Canada, with the rest in other markets, including Mexico and Europe.

Ford dealers will replace the fuel delivery module in the affected vehicles. No specific date has been set for the recall because "there are a limited number of parts available for vehicles that develop a fuel delivery module leak," according to Felker.

Owners of the vehicles will receive a letter in July advising them of the recall. A second letter will go out in September as parts become available.

Felker says that consumers who "smell a fuel leak or see fuel on the floor" should take the vehicle to their dealer immediately.

"There are enough parts at this point (to help those consumers)," she said.Owners can contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.

Edmunds says: Expect a long wait for this recall as Ford dealers stand in line for parts.
