TORRANCE, California — The base 2014 Acura MDX — the first two-wheel-drive version of the crossover — starts at $43,185, including an $895 destination charge. The 2014 Acura MDX goes on sale in early July.

The 2014 Acura MDX SH-AWD starts at $45,185, including shipping, reflecting a $1,010 price increase over the base 2013 Acura MDX.

The base 2014 Acura MDX with two-wheel drive slightly undercuts one of its chief domestic rivals, the 2013 Buick Enclave. The 2013 Buick Enclave with front-wheel drive starts at $43,355, including an $895 destination charge.

The 2014 Acura MDX is also less expensive than one of its chief German rivals, the 2013 BMW X5. The base 2013 BMW X5 xDrive35i starts at $48,425, including a $925 destination charge.

BMW and Buick have not announced 2014 pricing on the X5 or Enclave.

The top-of-the-line 2014 Acura MDX SH-AWD Advance with the Entertainment package starts at $57,400, including shipping. In comparison, the top-of-the-line 2013 Acura MDX with the Advance package and Entertainment package starts at $55,700, including shipping.

Honda notes that the difference in price between the new 2014 MDX with two-wheel drive and the base 2013 MDX with all-wheel drive amounts to $990.

The revised 2014 Acura MDX gets improved fuel economy, according to the EPA.

The 2014 Acura MDX two-wheel-drive version returns 20 mpg in city driving and 28 mpg on the highway. The 2014 Acura MDX with all-wheel drive returns 18 mpg in city driving and 27 mpg on the highway.

In comparison, the 2013 Acura MDX returns 16 mpg in city driving and 21 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

The 2014 Acura MDX gets a new 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 290 horsepower — 10 hp less than the outgoing model.

Edmunds says: The 2014 Acura MDX can lay claim to being more affordable than the 2013 model.
