DETROIT — General Motors said it will make remote services standard for OnStar-equipped 2014 Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac models, even if the owner declines to pay for other OnStar services.

The services include remotely unlocking doors, activating horn and lights and remote start for factory-equipped vehicles. GM will make the remote services standard via smartphone for five years through the OnStar RemoteLink Mobile App.

GM said more than 36 2014 model-year GM vehicles are compatible with the RemoteLink Mobile App, including the 2014 Chevrolet Impala and the 2014 GMC Sierra. Once the customer takes delivery of an eligible 2014 GM vehicle, they download the free application to a compatible smartphone and agree to terms.

The automaker says its RemoteLink Mobile App has been downloaded more than 1.5 million times with more than 320,000 regular users. RemoteLink was launched for the Chevrolet Volt in 2010.

"As mobile devices become a bigger part of our lives, GM understands the importance of providing our customers with the ability to use these devices as part of their vehicle experience," said Mary Chan, president of GM Global Connected Customer.

Edmunds says: Connectivity should not be optional, and automakers such as GM are beginning to take that lesson to heart.
