TORRANCE, California — Honda is revving up its push for hydrogen-fueled vehicles by announcing it is joining a new public-private partnership to support fuel-cell technology.

Honda announced on Friday that it has joined H2USA, a public-private partnership to support the development and commercialization of fuel-cell electric vehicles.

The Honda FCX Clarity was the first fuel-cell electric vehicle available for lease to U.S. consumers, according to Honda.

H2USA was launched recently by the U.S. Department of Energy to focus on developing a hydrogen infrastructure and to push transportation energy options, including fuel-cell electric vehicles.

"We believe FCEVs are important to the future of electric-drive, zero-emission transportation," said Steven Center, Honda's vice president for environmental business development, in a statement. "This public-private partnership is a necessary step to continue the development of a hydrogen refueling infrastructure for FCEV customers and leverage other hydrogen energy sources, including natural gas and renewables, allowing consumers in many parts of the country to take advantage of this clean, low-carbon transportation option."

There are just 10 hydrogen fueling station locations in the U.S., excluding private stations, according to the Alternative Fuels Data Center of the U.S. Department of Energy.

Oddly enough, the Department of Energy's Web site does not mention the H2USA program. However, the U.S. Department of Energy's Fuel Cell Technologies Office is dangling a potential H-Prize competition involving home hydrogen refueling stations.

These systems would provide supplemental hydrogen for vehicle fueling at single- or multi-family dwellings. At this point, no information is available about how to compete for the prize.

Edmunds says: The infrastructure problem is a major piece of the puzzle when it comes to mass acceptance of fuel-cell electric vehicles. But will Honda stepping forward prompt other automakers to follow?
